Commission on European Family Law (CEFL)

The leadership and management of the CEFL is one of the core tasks of the UCERF. As its main objective, the CEFL launched a pioneering theoretical and practical project concerning the harmonisation of family law in Europe. The major benefit which can be expected by the establishment of this Commission is the creation of a set of Principles of European Family Law, which aims to contribute towards the harmonisation of family law within Europe.

In 2004, the Principles of European Family Law Regarding Divorce and Maintenance between Former Spouses were introduced, followed in 2007 by the Principles of European Family Law Regarding Parental Responsibilities. The Principles of European Family Law Regarding Property Relations were published in 2013. (see http://www.intersentia.com/serie.aspx?serieCode=EFL&serieId=4&langId=2 for the published books)

Through the CEFL and other activities, UCERF has gained an extensive network of family law specialists from the Netherlands and abroad. This network is used to facilitate research trips abroad and to obtain information on foreign legal systems.
